The Police in the Bunkpurugu Yunyoo District of the North East Region have arrested four individuals for their alleged involvement in the murder of a 70-year-old woman, Noab Bilatukin, at Sangbana, a village near Bunkpurugu.

According to a police statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabiik Anmain, Head of the Public Affairs Unit in the North East Region, the suspects—identified as Suuk Jakwa, 67; Banyiwoo Ntookwib, 32; Moapya Kwayaja, 30; and Amos Nlaji, 29—accused the elderly woman of being a witch and lynched her on July 10, 2025. Several other accomplices are currently on the run.

“The suspects fled the village after committing the heinous act,” the statement noted.

DSP Anmain disclosed that the police, acting on credible intelligence, arrested the four suspects on July 14, 2025, at their various hideouts in communities around Bunkpurugu.

The suspects are currently in custody, assisting with investigations, and will be arraigned before court upon the conclusion of inquiries.

“The Police will like to reiterate our call on the general public, especially citizens of the North East Region, to desist from the practice of accusing people—particularly the aged—of being witches or wizards and subjecting them to violent attacks,” DSP Anmain emphasized.

He warned that such acts are criminal and anyone found culpable will be dealt with according to law.

Police investigations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who are still at large.
