The Bunkprugu Sector Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has successfully intercepted twenty-five bags of cocoa beans being smuggled from Kauk-Jago, a border community, into neighboring Togo.
The operation, carried out around 10:00 p.m., was based on a credible tip-off and is being hailed as a major win in the Service’s ongoing fight against smuggling in the region.
According to an official statement from the Bunkprugu Sector Command, the Officer in Charge (OIC), in collaboration with his Operations Commander, promptly mobilized a specialized team of eight officers. The officers were dispatched to the Kauk area where they laid an ambush that led to the seizure.
Two unregistered tricycles, commonly known as ‘motor kings’, were intercepted during the mission. They were found transporting the twenty-five bags of cocoa beans across the border. The suspects were immediately apprehended and are currently in custody, assisting with ongoing investigations.
The seized cocoa beans have since been handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Bunkprugu sector for further action.
Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the full scale of the smuggling network and to forestall future illegal activities along Ghana’s borders.
“This successful interception is a testament to the vigilance and cooperation of our security personnel. It underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding Ghana’s economic interests and ensuring border integrity,” the statement said.
The Ghana Immigration Service is urging members of the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities to help combat smuggling and cross-border crimes in the region.
