The Police in Walewale, North East Region, have arrested two young men in connection with the theft of a firearm and ammunition belonging to an officer of the Ghana Immigration Service.

The suspects, identified as Mohammed Basit, 18, and Baba Rasid, 22, allegedly broke into the officer’s private residence around noon on Saturday, May 17, 2025, while he was away.

According to police sources, the duo made away with a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with ten rounds of ammunition, along with two CZ rifle magazines, each containing 30 rounds.

In a statement confirming the arrest, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Robert Anabiik Anmain of the Public Relations Unit of the North East Regional Police Command said the suspects were apprehended at Kperiga, a suburb of Walewale.

“Acting on intelligence, our officers were able to track down the suspects to a location where they had hidden the weapon and ammunition inside a stationary vehicle,” DSP Anmain revealed.

He noted that the swift response by the police averted a potentially dangerous situation. “The retrieval of the firearm and ammunition was critical to ensuring public safety. The suspects are currently in custody and assisting with investigations,” he added.

DSP Anmain further indicated that preparations are underway to arraign the suspects before court once investigations are complete.

The Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of the public and called on residents to report suspicious activities in their communities.
