Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has strongly denied any involvement in the death of the party’s late Upper East Regional Chairman, Adams Mahama, and called for greater unity within the party ahead of its upcoming National Delegates Conference.

Speaking at a consultative meeting with party members in Bolgatanga as part of his nationwide stakeholder engagement tour on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Mr. Afoko said neither he nor any member of his family had any role in the circumstances that led to the death of the late regional chairman.

“Our late Regional Chairman, Adams, I can stand here today and tell you that I had no hand in what happened to him. My family had no hand in what happened to him,” he stated.

Adams Mahama died in 2015 following an acid attack at his residence in Bolgatanga, a case that attracted nationwide attention and led to extensive investigations and court proceedings.

Addressing lingering perceptions surrounding the incident, Mr. Afoko said suggestions linking him or his family to the late chairman’s death were unfounded. He stressed that the two families had maintained close historical and traditional ties spanning several generations.

According to him, the longstanding relationship between the Afoko and Mahama families made it inconceivable that he or any of his relatives would have been involved in the tragic incident.

“We allowed people to come and play games with us. But I want to state clearly that neither my family nor I had anything to do with the death of Adams Mahama,” he reiterated.

Mr. Afoko said the events surrounding the death of the late regional chairman contributed to divisions within the NPP and highlighted the need for reconciliation among party members.

He urged party faithful to focus on rebuilding trust and strengthening unity as the party prepares for future electoral contests.

The consultative meetings form part of Mr. Afoko’s nationwide outreach programme ahead of the NPP’s National Delegates Conference, where he is seeking support for his bid to return as National Chairman.

During the engagement, he also outlined aspects of his vision for the party, advocating stronger grassroots structures and greater involvement of polling station executives in decision-making processes.

Mr. Afoko called on members to put aside their differences and work collectively towards building a united and stronger NPP capable of meeting future political challenges.
