The 2023 Africa Games which was postponed to 2024, has now been announced to begin on March 8, 2024, to March 23, 2024.
According to the Coordinator of the African Union Sport Council, Dr. Decius Chipande at a press briefing in Accra on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, The multi-sport event will still be called “Accra 2023” despite taking place between March 8, 2024, and March 23, 2024.
The delay of the 13th edition of the Africa Games is to allow for the completion and testing of facilities that would be used during the event.
Ghana has been challenged to host the competition as a result of a conflict that existed between the African Union (AU), Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC), and the country’s inability to deliver infrastructure on time.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Games have given an assurance that all the facilities that will host the event will be completed and tested by December 2023.
Over 4,000 competitors are anticipated to compete over the course of the 15-day event across 25 different sports from all 54 African nations.
