Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that newly born babies will be issued Ghana card numbers right at birth beginning July this year.
The move is part of the government’s digitalization agenda that aims to create a database of every citizen.
Delivering his keynote address at the International Women’s Conference organized by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) women wing in the United Kingdom, he said his government through the issuance of the Ghana card, has fixed corruption-related problems at the birth and death registry.
“We have fixed the problem of fake birth certificates, and the bureaucracy and corruption at the birth and death registry so what we have done is to digitalize the processes at the birth and death, and link their systems with the Ghana Health Service and the NIA.”
Dr. Bawumia thus added that due to the completion of the integration of the databases of NIA, GHS, and the birth and death registry, newly born babies are going to be issued with Ghana card numbers.
“I am happy to announce that the integration of the database of the NIA, the Ghana Health Service and the birth and death registry is complete so from next month, when a child is born in Ghana we will issue the Ghana card number right at birth.”
