National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Chief Executive Officer Dr Bernard Okoe Boye is urging football supporters across the country to enrol on the National Health Insurance Scheme and stay as active members.
Dr Okoe Boye, a big follower of the local game led the Authority into a partnership with the four new Ghana Premier League entrants; Kotoku Royals, Samartex FC, Tamale City and Nsoatreman to register their players, dependents, club officials and fans.
At the unveiling of the event on Wednesday, he admonished football fans to take their health seriously by enrolling on the Scheme and not wait till one is sick before making such a move.
“In this current global issue where people are saying things are not easy, the minimum you should get covered is your health, because as for food someway somehow you will get something to eat but you don’t know what will happen in the next day so it is important to get medical insurance,” he said
He added that “the National Health Insurance Authority is committed to working hard to achieve the objective of this government which is to ensure that every Ghanaian has an insurance cover”.
“By law every person resident in Ghana, whether Ghanaian or foreigner, once you are here for more than three months you must be registered on the national health insurance scheme. Half of Ghanaians are not on insurance, not because they can’t afford it but because they either don’t care or are unaware this is our job here at NHIS to find innovative ways to get people to register for medical insurance and this partnership is a way of doing that,” he added.
“The clubs have followers attached to them and we want to use this opportunity to enrol more people on the scheme.”
This top-notch sports marketing drive is to encourage soccer fans to appreciate the NHIS brand and encourage people to enrol on the scheme.
How would this be done?
The National Health Insurance Authority will allocate resources to enrol all players of the clubs, their technical team, and management and target 5,000 of their fans.
With this move, the Authority has the potential to register close to 20,000 persons connected to each club.
