The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has expressed its profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for fulfilling his promise to uncap the budget of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
In a statement released today, the NHIA described the decision, announced during the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), as a “significant turning point” for the scheme. By removing the budgetary cap, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and securing sustainable funding for the NHIS.
The NHIA highlighted that this bold step will have far-reaching implications for healthcare delivery in the country. With the additional resources, the scheme will be able to expand its coverage, settle claims promptly, and improve service delivery. Ultimately, it ensures that every Ghanaian, regardless of socio-economic status, can access quality and affordable healthcare.
“This decision will significantly advance our goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all Ghanaians,” the statement read. “We are committed to working with all stakeholders to maximize the benefits of this critical intervention for the collective good of our nation.”
The uncapping of the NHIS budget has been hailed by many as a major step toward addressing the long-standing funding challenges of the scheme. This development comes at a time when the country is striving to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure and ensure equitable access to essential services.
The NHIA concluded by reiterating its readiness to collaborate with government and other partners to build a healthier and more resilient Ghana.
