The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) will, from 1 June 2026, implement a nationwide cashless payment system across all District Offices to improve efficiency and strengthen accountability within the Scheme.
The initiative forms part of the digital transformation agenda being championed by the Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr Victor Asare Bampoe, under his three-point vision.
Under the new arrangement, NHIS members will make registration and renewal payments via mobile wallet platforms instead of paying in cash at district offices.
The move is expected to reduce cash-handling risks, improve transparency, and promote greater accountability in the Scheme’s operations.
According to a directive issued by the Finance and Investment Directorate, District Offices are no longer permitted to collect physical cash from NHIS members or Ghana Card holders for registration and renewal services.
Registration Officers have also been directed to fully utilise the E-Payment system when serving members nationwide.
The directive, however, provides temporary exceptions for new applicants without Ghana Cards and members seeking the replacement of lost NHIS cards.
In such instances, registration officers may process payments manually for a limited period to ensure uninterrupted access to healthcare services while identity verification processes are completed.
As part of measures to ensure strict compliance, Regional Accountants and the Head Office will generate monthly exception reports to monitor adherence to the policy and identify cases of non-compliance.
The directive further noted that disciplinary action may be taken where necessary, in accordance with existing NHIA regulations and conditions of service.
The implementation of the cashless payment system is expected to support the NHIS’s broader vision of building a more efficient, technology-driven, and transparent health insurance system for Ghanaians.
