In a noisy scene at the CalBank Head Office, the National Identification Authority (NIA) faced backlash as individuals seeking Ghana Card replacements were denied access until May 1, 2024.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, when NIA staff adamantly instructed replacement hopefuls to leave, citing technical issues and a focus on new applicants only.
Despite persistent inquiries, NIA representatives remained tight-lipped, refusing to disclose details to the media.
Frustration mounted as applicants, like one who wished to remain anonymous, recounted hours spent waiting in vain queues, only to be told to come on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, for his Ghana Card replacement.
According to him, a staff of the NIA told them they would only attend to new applicants today.
“The personnel told us to go home and return tomorrow because they have technical issues regarding individuals seeking to replace their lost Ghana card with new ones but for new Ghana Card applicants, they will be attended to. I came here at midnight leaving my sick daughter at home only to be told this.” the frustrated applicant said
Adding to the turmoil, the NIA announced a forthcoming increase in registration fees and service charges effective May 1, 2024, prompting further concerns among the public.
Efforts to obtain clarity from NIA’s Executive Secretary, Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah, were met with silence, leaving many questions unanswered amidst the chaos.
