Nigeria seals spot among Africa’s top 5 economies as reserves hit $46B, strongest in eight years

Nigeria’s external reserves have climbed past the $46 billion mark, reaching their strongest level in about eight years and reinforcing the country’s position among Africa’s top five economies by reserve buffers.

The milestone is reflected in Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) data dated January 22, 2026, marking a steady build-up in foreign exchange reserves since 2025.

The reserve accumulation strengthens Nigeria’s import cover, enhances confidence in the naira, and gives policymakers more room to manage external shocks as the country moves closer to another election cycle.

It also signals a notable turnaround from years of reserve pressure driven by oil price volatility, FX demand backlogs, and rising import bills.

Nigeria’s reserves last hovered around similar levels in 2018, before declining through subsequent years amid pandemic disruptions, lower oil receipts, and currency management challenges.

Over the past decade, reserves fluctuated sharply, dipping below $35 billion at points, before staging a gradual recovery beginning in late 2024 and accelerating through 2025.

What’s driving Nigeria’s reserve rebound

Several factors have contributed to the recent rise.

Improved crude oil production and export receipts have lifted dollar inflows, while FX market reforms including exchange-rate unification and tighter monetary conditions, have helped attract portfolio inflows and reduce speculative pressure.

At the same time, lower fuel import demand, supported by growing domestic refining capacity, has eased one of Nigeria’s largest sources of FX outflows.

Remittances and cautious reserve management by the CBN have also played a role, allowing reserves to build even amid persistent global uncertainties.

How Nigeria compares with Africa’s largest economies

At $46 billion, Nigeria now ranks firmly among Africa’s top reserve holders, competing closely with the continent’s biggest economies.

South Africa maintains reserves above $55 billion, supported by diversified exports and deep financial markets. Egypt operates in a similar range, buoyed by remittances, tourism, and Suez Canal revenues, while Libya remains Africa’s largest reserve holder, with levels above $70 billion, largely driven by oil income.

Nigeria’s resurgence places it ahead of several peers and narrows the gap with North and Southern Africa’s economic heavyweights.

Analysts say sustaining the momentum will depend on consistent oil output, disciplined fiscal policy, and continued FX reforms – factors that will determine whether the country can convert stronger reserves into long-term macroeconomic stability.
