The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 36-year-old Nigerian national, Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma, in connection with a violent armed robbery attack on a Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor at Avenor, Accra.
Chukwuma, who works as an illegal miner (galamsey operator), was arrested shortly after the attack, which occurred on the night of Sunday, June 30, 2025, and left the victim with a gunshot injury to her leg.
According to a statement signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs at the Accra Regional Police Command, the suspect and his accomplice — identified only as Emeka, who is currently on the run — arrived at the victim’s workplace around 8:30 p.m. on an unregistered motorbike.
“They attacked the victim at gunpoint and demanded her money,” the statement said.
“During the attack, the suspect fired three shots on the ground, one of which struck the victim’s left leg. Fearing for her life, she handed over her bag containing GHS 20,000.00.”
The suspects attempted to flee but were pursued by a courageous bystander who raised an alarm. Others joined in the chase, which resulted in the robbers crashing their motorbike. Emmanuel Okafor Chukwuma was apprehended at the scene while his accomplice managed to escape.
“During police investigations, the suspect admitted to the offence in his caution statement and disclosed that he and his accomplice had planned to escape to Nigeria after the robbery. They had already secured travel tickets for the escape,” the police statement added.
Chukwuma has since been arraigned before court and remanded into police custody. He is expected to reappear on July 30, 2025.
Meanwhile, the stolen bag — which contained GHS 9,000 at the time of the recovery — has been retrieved and returned to the victim.
“The Accra Regional Police Command commends the bravery and support of the public. We assure the public of our continued efforts to apprehend Emeka, the other accomplice on the run, and urge all to report suspicious activities through the police emergency numbers 18555 or 191,” Supt. Juliana Obeng stated.
