A Nigerian female sex worker, Miriam Brain has been remanded into police custody for human trafficking and related offences by the Accra Circuit Court ‘4’, presided over by Kizita Naa Koowa Quarshie.

Miriam Brain, the sex worker was accused of recruiting a teenage girl, 18, from Nigeria to exploit her in prostitution.

Although the victim has been rescued by the police, Miriam has pleaded not guilty to attempt to commit a crime and human trafficking.

On Thursday, November, 16, the accused was remanded and on Tuesday, 29th November 2022, is expected to appear in court.

On October 25, 2022, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah first presented the case to the court.

Brief facts

C/Ins Anquandah told the court that the complainant, in this case, is a casual labourer, whilst the accused person is a sex worker.

He noted that the complainant and accused are Nigerian nationals living in Ghana.

According to him, in December 2021, the accused and one Mary, who is currently in Nigeria, allegedly visited Ghana to engage in prostitution.

He indicated that the two stayed at Kasoa, but went their separate ways after a misunderstanding ensued between them.

While Mary went back to Nigeria, the accused person remained in Ghana and moved to stay at Mempeasem in East Legon.

The prosecutor added that on Saturday, October 1, 2022, Mary recruited and transported the victim to Ghana and was received by the accused.

He said the accused attempted to exploit the victim in prostitution, but the victim pleaded with her that she was only 18 years and a virgin, but the accused turned deaf ears to her.

“The accused person went out with the victim for two days, but no one had sex with her,” he stated. “On their second outing, the victim sensed danger and jumped into a private car and was sent to the East Legon Police Station, where she complained to the police to that effect.”

The Prosecuting Officer added that on October 7, the victim was accompanied by the police to the accused person’s residence and had her arrested.

He added that the matter was later referred to the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit at the Police Headquarters where, after investigations, the accused was charged and arraigned before the honourable count.
