A heavy security presence has been established in the Nkwanta South Municipality following a wave of renewed violence that has left at least five people dead.

In a swift response to the deteriorating security situation, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) ordered the immediate deployment of personnel from the National Police Operations.

The reinforcement, which arrived late Wednesday night, includes two armoured personnel carriers intended to stabilise the township and prevent further bloodshed.

According to a statement released by the Oti Regional Police Headquarters in Dambai, a joint task force—comprising the police, military, National Intelligence Bureau (formerly BNI), defence intelligence, and the Ghana National Fire Service—has recovered the bodies of five victims.

The deceased, identified as three males and two females, were found at two separate locations within the municipality.

The Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Region, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, confirmed that while a fragile calm has returned to the area, investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the attacks.

“Investigations have commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify and bring perpetrators to justice,” DSP Nchor stated.

The police administration has appealed to the residents of Nkwanta and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies. Authorities are also calling on the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for the killings.

It further issued a stern warning against the spread of misinformation on social media, noting that inflammatory reports have the potential to “flare up passions” and undo the progress made in restoring peace to the district.

As of Thursday morning, shops in the central business district remained partially closed, though security patrols have been intensified to ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens.
