Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has issued a strong warning to armed robbers and other criminals, declaring that the Ghana Police Service will pursue them regardless of where they hide.
The warning comes as the Police Administration announced a series of major breakthroughs following weeks of painstaking, coordinated and intelligence-led operations across the country.
Briefing the media on Monday, the IGP disclosed that the operations had led to the arrest of several suspects and the recovery of AK-47 assault rifles, pistols, pump-action guns, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and other exhibits linked to murder, robbery and other serious crimes.
Mr Yohuno said the Police would sustain the intelligence-led operations until criminal networks responsible for violent crimes were dismantled.
“No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” the IGP warned.
Among the major breakthroughs announced by the Police was the arrest of 32-year-old Abraham Awundok, who is accused of murdering Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.
The Police said investigations established that the couple had been murdered and their remains were subsequently recovered.
According to the IGP, Awundok, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, allegedly murdered them and took their mobile phones, money and private vehicle before fleeing Ghana for the United Arab Emirates.
He was subsequently declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on August 30, 2026, by investigators from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL.
The suspect allegedly admitted to the murders during interrogation and remains in Police custody as investigations continue.
Bank robbery syndicate busted
The Police have also made a major breakthrough in their investigations into a robbery syndicate targeting banks and customers in Accra and Tema.
The IGP said the syndicate allegedly monitored bank customers after withdrawals, used master keys to open vehicles and, in some cases, broke into vehicles to steal money and valuables.
The gang was also suspected of planning attacks on some banks.
On August 13, 2026, the Police received intelligence that members of the gang had been spotted at a bank on the Spintex Road and were heading towards Labone and Cantonments.
The suspects were monitored in a black Hyundai Tucson and a Toyota Highlander before they were spotted at Labone, where they had allegedly positioned themselves strategically between several banks.
A swift Police response foiled the planned attack.
Two suspects were shot, one escaped, while another was arrested.
A search of the Toyota Highlander resulted in the recovery of 13 different vehicle registration numbers and a Blow F90 pistol.
Police investigations allegedly revealed that the suspects imported vehicles into Ghana and changed the Nigerian registration plates to Ghanaian plates to facilitate their criminal activities.
One suspect, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, 49, has been remanded into custody.
Three AK-47s, 357 rounds recovered
In another major operation, the Police dismantled a robbery gang allegedly operating across Wassa Akropong, Diaso, Dome, Abofour Camp and the Manso enclave.
Five suspects were arrested, while another suspect died during the operation.
The Police recovered three AK-47 assault rifles, five magazines, 357 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and two vehicles.
The gang is suspected of targeting gold dealers’ shops, mining sites and communities.
The Police also arrested four suspects in connection with the robbery and murder of a 40-year-old gold buyer, Seth Kobina, at Agona Fie near Agona Nkwanta.
Two locally manufactured pistols, five live BB cartridges, a metal bar and two cutlasses were recovered.
Three arrested over Northern Region robberies
The Northern Regional Police Intelligence Directorate has arrested Yacouba Oumar, Abdul Alhassan Kudus and Abdul Rahman Haruna alias Saaga over a series of armed robbery cases in Buipe, Tamale and Mion.
The suspects are allegedly members of a gang operating with two AK-47 rifles and a pump-action gun.
They are also linked to the robbery and murder of a mobile money vendor at Fofulso, near the Damango Junction.
The Police are pursuing other suspected accomplices and efforts are underway to retrieve the remaining weapons.
Buipe robbery mastermind dies
The alleged mastermind behind the Buipe Cattle Market robbery and murder, 60-year-old Alhaji Imoro Beliko, also known as Alhaji Yacouba, Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu, died during a Police operation.
The Police alleged that the suspect contracted robbers and supplied them with weapons to attack traders carrying large sums of money.
The development follows the June 29, 2026 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market, during which two mobile money vendors were attacked and GH₵430,000 was reportedly stolen.
The suspect was located on September 5, 2026, following intelligence gathered by the Police Intelligence Directorate.
The Police said he attempted to escape during the operation and was shot. He later died from his injuries.
Highway robbery gang busted
The Police have also arrested a suspected gang leader and other accomplices over the August 18, 2026 highway robbery on the Enyiresi-Sekyere stretch of the Accra-Kumasi highway.
Those arrested include the alleged gang leader, Obotan; his mother, who allegedly concealed the weapon used in the robbery; Issaka Napson, an alleged weapons supplier; Issaka Majeed; and Majeed Huzeifa.
A 14-year-old juvenile allegedly used as a lookout was also arrested.
Police recovered an ADLER pump-action gun, a double-barrel gun, three single-barrel guns, a locally manufactured pistol, cartridges, cutlasses, handcuffs, jack knives, pepper spray, a pinch bar, an ammunition pouch, a tactical vest and an unregistered Royal 125 motorbike.
Five arrested, eight AK-47s recovered
The Police have further arrested five suspects accused of trading in firearms and recovered eight AK-47 assault rifles.
The suspects, arrested between June and July 2026, are Munkaila Yusif alias Karyima, Abdulai Fatawu Boniface, Abdallah Imrana Gomda, Sualesu Sheriffa and Ibrahim Adams alias Ibru.
One SMG rifle and two foreign pistols were also recovered.
The suspects have been remanded by the Accra Circuit Court, with the case adjourned to Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
The IGP commended Police personnel involved in the operations and thanked members of the public for providing credible intelligence.
He also expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the government for logistical support, particularly the provision of armoured vehicles and pickup trucks.
Mr Yohuno urged the public to continue providing information on suspects at large through the nearest Police station or the Police Emergency Line 191, assuring informants of strict confidentiality.
He also commended the media for supporting the Police in promoting public safety and accountability.
The IGP reiterated that the Police would continue with intelligence-led operations against criminals across the country.
“No matter where you run, no matter where you hide, we will come for you,” he said.
