The Minister of Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has reassured Ghanaians of the country’s preparedness to manage and contain the spread of meningitis.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, he confirmed that no meningitis-related deaths have been recorded in the past week.
The minister provided this update following his visit to the Upper West Region, where he assessed the ongoing efforts to combat the disease.
Accompanied by the Acting Director of Ghana Health Services, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Hon. Akandoh reported that approximately 94 suspected cases of meningitis have been identified, with around 20 cases confirmed.
To support healthcare facilities in affected areas, the ministry has distributed essential medical supplies, including antibiotics and vaccines, to ensure prompt treatment for those infected.
As part of his visit, the Health Minister met with the Overlord of the Wala Traditional Area, Wa Naa Seidu Fuseini Pelpuo IV, to discuss strategies for managing the outbreak and strengthening future health responses.
He also toured the Nadowli District Hospital, where several meningitis patients are receiving treatment.
Hon. Akandoh urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms such as severe headaches, fever, and neck stiffness. He also called on the media to intensify public education on the importance of early detection and treatment.
“We need the support of the media to raise awareness. Early reporting to health facilities can save lives,” he emphasized.
The government continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to containing the disease while ensuring that healthcare workers are well-equipped to respond effectively.
