Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has announced that the government does not intend to undertake major renegotiations of conditions of service across the public sector in 2026.

Speaking at the 2026 Annual Labour Conference in Ho, the Vice President acknowledged that while some progress has been made in improving public sector emoluments, the current compensation structure has come under significant strain over time.

She explained that, as an interim measure, the government will implement targeted and modest adjustments to selected allowances while comprehensive reforms to the national emoluments framework are being finalised.

According to her, the temporary intervention is intended to provide the necessary fiscal and administrative space for the new compensation framework to be fully implemented.

“The establishment of the Independent Emolument Commission is a deliberate intervention to address the issue. It allows the government to stabilise the compensation system and build strong institutional conventions, while ensuring continuity and industrial harmony.

“The government has also proposed that 2026 will not be a year for major renegotiation of conditions of service across the public sector.

“Instead, targeted and modest improvement to selected allowances will be implemented as an interim measure while the foundational reforms to our emolument system are completed,” she said.
