President-elect John Dramani Mahama has formally directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary leadership to nominate The Right Honourable Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.
In a statement issued on Sunday, January 5, 2025, and signed by his Special Aide, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President-elect highlighted Bagbin’s extensive parliamentary experience and leadership qualities.
Bagbin, a distinguished politician, previously served as Member of Parliament for Nadowli, Minority and Majority Leader, and most recently as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.
According to the statement, Bagbin’s wealth of experience positions him as the ideal candidate to guide Parliament during this critical period in Ghana’s democratic and legislative development.
The President-elect expressed confidence that Bagbin’s leadership would strengthen Parliament’s ability to fulfill its oversight responsibilities effectively.
The nomination comes as the NDC prepares to assume leadership in the 9th Parliament, signalling a continued focus on strengthening democratic institutions and governance.
Further announcements are expected once Parliament convenes to finalize the Speaker’s selection.
