The much-needed teachers’ bungalows are finally becoming a reality at Nkwatia SHS. The sod-cutting ceremony held on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026, marked the start of construction, bringing hope to the school community.
The new bungalows is a one-chamber 20-units accommodation edifice that will house several teachers, boosting their morale and contributing to a more stable academic environment. Nkwatia SHS’s headteacher expressed gratitude, noting, “This is a significant boost to our efforts to attract and retain quality staff.”
The project is part of broader initiatives to enhance teacher welfare and improve learning conditions across the district.
The project, funded by the Nkwatia Old Students Association (NOSA), and other benevolent agencies, will provide accommodation for the school’s teaching staff, improving their focus on delivering quality education. The students cheer, knowing their teachers will be comfortable and motivated.
The project forms part of measures that marked its sixtieth (60th) anniversary, by the Nkwatia Old Students Association (NOSA).
Speaking in an interview with Republic Online, Central Organizing Committee Chairman, Kwame Amo underscored the need for the construction of the facility, citing the uneasiness teachers go through by day to reach out to the students.
Mr. Amo prauds the initiative, assuring continued support for education in the district. The ceremony ended with a symbolic tour of the construction site, as dreams of a brighter future for Nkwatia SHS begin to take shape.
The Kyidom Hene of Nkwatia, emphasized the importance of providing adequate accommodation for teachers, saying, “This project underscores our commitment to improving educational infrastructure and, by extension, the quality of education in our district.”
The head mistress for Nkwatia SHS, Gloria Baafi extended her appreciation for the NOSA and commended them for the construction of the Bungalows, citing the relief the edifice will provide for the teachers and students after the completion.
She touched on the lack of teachers’ presence in the school due to the unavailability of accommodation. She said, when these provisions are made, the authorities will be able to check indiscipline and the protection of students.
“Now the world is a global one and other institutions have such facilities helping students to enhance their studies and I believe such facilities will equally enhance our students, build their confidence level and help them to study”, she added.
BACKGROUND
The association launched the main event that was scheduled for November last year, on Thursday, May 22, 2025 at the GNAT hall in Accra.
The President noted the Association, Mr. Asumadu (Zigor) announced that it was looking forward to inviting the Ghana’s President John Mahama and the Education Minister to grace the occasion.
The 93′ year Group in July 2022, constructed an eight – bed infirmary for the school. During the President’s speech, he called for the continuous maintenance of the facility. However, among many other important things, Mr. Asumadu sounded for the provision of accommodation for the Teaching staff. He said, lack of teachers presence in the school during leisure hours can breed Indiscipline and immoral behavior.
‘As I speak the school needs a lot of pressing demands, important of it all is the provision of accommodation for teachers. About 95% of the teachers live outside the school’, he stated.
He also laid for the provision of a modern Library and an ICT lab.
The Central organizing committee chairman, Kwame Amo added that between April and May, 2025, the association undertook a social contract by planting trees. He said the association has also planned to at least, for once attend traditional programs within the Nkwatia Area. He added that activities such as Mentorship program, Health screening, clean up exercise, fun games, debate and science quiz and Homecoming were created before the main event.
Nkwatia Senior High School has a population of nearly 2,000 students. She revealed that the school needs an additional dormitory for the females.
