Tensions soared at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Odorkor, Ablekuma North, on Friday as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Deputy National Organiser, Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah, was brutally attacked during the parliamentary rerun.
The chaos unfolded when a group of unidentified individuals stormed the polling station, unleashing violence that targeted several NPP members. Asamoah was seen in a widely circulated video being overpowered, dragged to the ground, and viciously kicked and punched.
The attackers are alleged to be affiliated with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), though investigations are still ongoing.
The assault disrupted the voting process, forcing a temporary halt and creating panic among voters and officials. Eyewitnesses described scenes of fear and confusion as the violence escalated.
NPP parliamentary candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson were also reportedly targeted in the melee, prompting renewed calls for heightened security and accountability.
The Electoral Commission had organized the rerun in 19 polling stations to resolve disputes from the December 2024 general elections. However, the violence has raised serious concerns about the safety and fairness of the ongoing democratic process.
