The Aspiring General Secretary hopeful of the New Patriotic Party, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Koduah has reiterated his commitment to resolve the division and disaffection in the party’s misfortunes going into election 2024.
The lawyer by profession who doubles as the Chief Executive Officer for the Youth Employment Agency told Kwame Koranteng on Republic FM’s Anopa Dawuro on Friday, June 3, that despite the numerous social interventions that were implemented by the Akufo-Addo led administration, the party lost some parliamentary seats of 169 in 2020 general.
According to him if a party has been able to ease the burdens of the people with such initiatives, it must have been able to maintain the 1 million votes it accumulated in the 2016 but could not do that and rather, it slipped off from 169 to 137 seats, which according to him means, something was obviously not right.
“Going into the 2020 elections, we lost some seats from 169 to 137 and in 2016, we pulled over 1 million votes margin but what did we see in 2022? This government introduced a lot of flagship programs including the free SHS, 1 constituency, 1 million dollars and others and we lost major seats, it should tell you something was not right somewhere because the free SHS had a lot of impact on the parents, although we won the election but it was not what we were expecting”, he said.
He said, apathy, party management and public perception about one’s party is what drives disaffection for a political party.
According to him, from 2017 to 2020, it was something he realized the party did not manage well including other petty things that made the party to lose some seats in parliament.
Establishing his willingness to right the wrongs, Lawyer Justin Frimpong Koduah added that he is poised to avert the divisiveness whenever the party goes for internal elections.
Article 10 clause 7(5) of the party’s constitution mandates the general secretary to oversee the operations of the party and coordinate the activities of the party from the constituency, regional, national and external branches.
Lawyer Koduah attributed the party’s woes in the 2020 elections to the lack of these planned activities.
“And these things I mentioned are some of the things that discourage people from communicating for the party and sent the party into such dungeon. But Kwame, I’m very certain that if I’m given the nod as the general secretary, I will be able to deal with and amend all these party apathy and s these are the things I’m sure if the party gives me the opportunity, I resolve all the issues”, he stated.
The party’s national election is scheduled to take off in July, 2022.
