All five New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential aspirants have signed a peace pact pledging unity, respect for the electoral process, and support for the eventual winner ahead of the party’s January 31, 2026, presidential primaries.

The aspirants who signed the agreement are: Kennedy Agyapong – former MP for Assin Central, Dr. Bryan Acheampong – MP for Abetifi and former Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – former Vice President, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum – former Minister of Education, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong – former NPP General Secretary.

Background of the aspirants:

Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a civil engineer and former NPP General Secretary, is contesting for the third time, after previous bids in 2007 and 2023.

Kennedy Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central, is contesting for the second time, having finished second in 2023 behind Dr. Bawumia.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong is making his debut in the flagbearer race.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 presidential candidate, is contesting for a second time after winning the 2023 primary.

Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe, is contesting the primary for the first time.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said the pact reflects the party’s commitment to a transparent, fair, and peaceful primary process.

“The peace pact ensures that all candidates actively participate at every stage, accept the results of the January 31 primaries, and commit to maintaining party cohesion while supporting the winner in the 2028 general elections,” Mr. Kodua Frimpong stated.

Under the agreement, the aspirants acknowledged that the primary process has been conducted transparently and inclusively, with equal opportunities for all participants. They pledged to accept the results as a binding expression of the delegates’ will.

The pact further commits the aspirants to promote peace and unity before, during, and after the primaries, refrain from actions or rhetoric that could disrupt party cohesion, and remain loyal to the NPP regardless of the outcome.

All candidates also pledged to actively support the eventual winner, not only during the 2028 elections but also in efforts to secure a strong parliamentary majority.

Any disputes arising from violations of the pact will be resolved through the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms, in accordance with the NPP constitution.
