Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has thrown his hat into the ring, officially declaring his intention to contest in the party’s upcoming 2026 presidential primaries.
His announcement was made on Tuesday, July 29 — the same day the NPP opened nominations — signalling the official start of the race to select a new flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
At a brief but powerful declaration event held in Accra, Ing. Agyepong presented himself as the most credible and unifying figure to lead the NPP back to power. With the theme “Service, Sacrifice, and Selflessness”, he called for a return to the party’s founding values and appealed to party delegates to reject the creeping influence of money in internal politics.
“Politics belongs to the grassroots — the ordinary people — not to a privileged elite engaged in petty partisan squabbles,” Agyepong said passionately
He warned against choices that would lead to prolonged reconciliation processes and further divisions within the party. “With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory. We need a pair of clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart to lead our party and our nation.”
He also extended an olive branch to Alan Kyerematen, a former flagbearer aspirant who left the party, urging him to return. “This party was built on sacrifice, not privilege,” he reminded.
The event drew several prominent attendees, including former NPP MPs such as Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, signaling growing support for his campaign.
Meanwhile, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced that nominations will close on August 28, with internal elections scheduled for January 31, 2026. Aspiring candidates are expected to pay a non-refundable nomination fee of GHS100,000.
With this announcement, Ing. Kwabena Agyepong has officially reignited his political journey, offering himself as the candidate of clean leadership, principled service, and party renewal.
