The campaign team of New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has blamed the party’s favouritism towards Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued by Kwasi Kwarteng, spokesperson for the Agyapong campaign, the team condemned the NPP’s use of official party platforms, particularly social media handles, to promote Dr. Bawumia’s nomination filing to the exclusion of other aspirants.

“Unity cannot be achieved when official party handles are reduced to campaign tools for Dr. Bawumia,” the statement read.

Kwarteng accused the party leadership of repeating the same pattern of bias that, he said, undermined its credibility and cohesion ahead of the last election.

“These unfortunate acts were among the reasons for our poor performance in past elections. Yet, clearly, we seem not to have learnt any lessons,” he stated.

According to the campaign, under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership the NPP recorded its worst electoral performance in history, citing a 31% drop in national votes, a 16% decline in northern votes, a 33% fall in southern votes, and minimal support from Zongo communities.

Rather than rebuild trust and unity after the 2024 loss, the statement said, party leadership continues to “shamelessly project” Dr. Bawumia as the establishment’s preferred candidate, sidelining other contenders in the process.

“Leadership continues to impose the very candidate under whom we suffered these losses, shamelessly projecting him as the ‘establishment choice’ by giving him undue advantages and platforms,” Kwarteng added.

He warned that this approach risks alienating the party’s grassroots base, many of whom are growing disillusioned with the internal process.

“The grassroots will not be forced into silence while the future of the party is mortgaged for one individual,” the statement emphasised.
