The Ashanti Region parliamentary caucus of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over security arrangements for the upcoming re-run of the Council of State election, slated for Monday.
The MPs blame the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) for any potential security breaches.
Their concerns stem from the refusal to change the election venue to the Regional Police Headquarters, a proposal the caucus insists would enhance security for the electoral process.
The caucus spokesperson, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, argued that security at the current venue, the Regional Coordinating Council has been compromised.
He warned that the caucus would hold the IGP and the REGSEC Chairman fully accountable should disruptions occur again.
Last week, the initial election process was marred by chaos when a group of thugs stormed the venue, disrupting the counting process and scattering ballot papers and election materials. The Electoral Commission subsequently ordered a re-run of the election.
In response, the Ashanti NPP MPs have reiterated their call for enhanced security measures, emphasizing that moving the election to the police headquarters would guarantee a safer and more orderly process.
Tafo MP Vincent Ekow Assafuah stressed that failure to address security concerns could undermine the credibility of the election, urging authorities to act swiftly in the interest of fairness and order.
