The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has officially opened nominations for its upcoming presidential primaries, scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026, in accordance with Article 13 of the party’s constitution.
A statement issued on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, announced that the nomination window will remain open until Thursday, August 28, 2025.
As part of the requirements, presidential aspirants are expected to pay a non-refundable application fee of GH₵100,000 to pick up the nomination forms, and an additional GH₵500,000 as a filing fee. Both payments are to be made via banker’s draft addressed to the NPP National Headquarters in Accra.
In addition to the fees, aspirants will be required to pay a compulsory development levy, the details of which will be communicated later by the party’s National Council.
“All nomination forms shall be obtained from the Office of the General Secretary at the party’s headquarters,” the statement emphasized.
Mr. Kodua added that all presidential aspirants are to temporarily suspend their campaign activities until after the upcoming Akwatia by-election, to allow the party to fully focus its energy and resources on retaining the parliamentary seat.
This announcement signals the official start of the race to select the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections. So far, several high-profile members have expressed interest in contesting.
Among them are the MP for Abetifi and former Agriculture Minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; outspoken Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong; and Bosomtwe MP and former Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
The upcoming primary is expected to be one of the most competitive in the party’s recent history as it seeks to maintain internal unity while positioning itself for another shot at the presidency.
