Energy Minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South in the Ashanti region, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh has expressed his support for Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the party in the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia and nine (9) other aspirants are seeking to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to possibly “break the 8” come 2024 and to achieve that dream, the Vice President would need the votes of delegates across the country.
During the Vice President’s visit to the Manhyia constituency as part of his tour in the Ashanti region, the Manhyia South MP said “I am fully in support of my father Dr. Bawumia. Manhyia South is fully behind him. He will break the 8.”
According to the energy minister, if his grandfather, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has announced publicly that Dr. Bawumia is his son in whom he is very well pleased. If my father (Dr. Bawumia) has received the blessings of my grandfather to see the leadership of the NPP, who am I to disobey Otumfuo?
Dr. Prempeh also added that, the Vice President’s sterling qualities, experience, deepest sense of loyalty and sacrifices for the party makes him the party’s best foot going into the 2024 elections.
The NPP will go to the polls in November to elect a flagbearer after it has conducted its special electoral college in August to reduce the number of flagbearer aspirants to five (5) as mandated by the party’s constitution.
Other aspirants hoping to lead the party after a successful vetting include; former Trade and Industry minster, Alan Kyeremanten, Former Agric minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie, a former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Joe Ghartey, a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former MP for Offinso North, Dr. Kofi Konada Apraku, a former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, Kwadwo Poku and Francis Addai-Nimoh.
