The National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Council (NC) of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) will meet today, December 6, to discuss and finalise the process of selecting potential running mates for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This process is in line with the party’s constitution of selecting a running mate 12 months before a major election if the president is not a candidate.
Per their party’s calendar, today, December 6, is the appropriate date to elect a running mate for their presidential candidate unless the National Council suspends the party’s constitutional provision and directs otherwise.
The Vice President is expected to propose his running mate, whom he thinks he can work with to break the eight in the next election. However, names such as Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Energy Minister), Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum (Education Minister), Minister of Food and Agriculture – Dr. Bryan Acheampong and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Majority Leader) have popped up to be fit and capable of being the flagbearer’s running mate.
The NEC is expected to deliberate on these candidates and formally present its recommendation to the National Council for approval.
