A dramatic incident occurred in Tolomedzi, KpareKpare Electoral Area in the Krachi East Municipality, Oti Region, a picturesque community known for its rich wildlife and serene waterways, when a canoe carrying eight people capsized after an unexpected hippopotamus attack.
The incident, which took place on Saturday afternoon, sent shockwaves through the local community and highlighted the dangers of venturing too close to these powerful animals.
According to eyewitnesses, the group was enjoying a leisurely paddle along the river when they inadvertently got too close to a hippopotamus, one of Africa’s most dangerous animals.
Feeling threatened, the animal charged at the canoe, causing it to overturn violently.
Panic ensued as the occupants were thrown into the water, struggling to stay afloat amid the chaos. Local authorities and rescue teams were quickly alerted.
Fortunately, all seven individuals who fell into the water were rescued safely, albeit shaken and cold. They were saved by nearby fishermen who witnessed the incident and rushed to help.
The eighth member of the group, who managed to cling to the overturned canoe, was also rescued shortly afterward.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of wildlife and the importance of keeping a safe distance from potentially dangerous animals.
The Wildlife Division of the Forestry Commission has since issued warnings to canoeist and boaters in the area, urging them to remain vigilant and respect the habitats of hippopotamuses and other wildlife.
