O/R: Man steals ¢38,000 to spoil girls and lodge in hotel

A 22-year-old labourer has been accused of stealing Gh¢35,000 from his employer in the Oti Region and fleeing to Accra, where he reportedly spent part of the money on hotel stays with friends.

Police say the suspect, Enoch Njofuni, allegedly took the cash from electronics dealer Kabiru Asmiu’s room while he was asleep. After the incident, Njofuni reportedly confided in his friend, 20-year-old labourer Mmoafuni Mboribe, who advised him to leave town.

The two allegedly travelled to Accra the next day and stayed at a barber shop belonging to a third friend, Abdul Aziz, 26, before moving to a hotel that charged Gh¢250 a night.

Investigators say Njofuni gave Gh¢8,000 to Mboribe, who allegedly shared Gh¢3,000 with his girlfriend. Aziz is also reported to have taken Gh¢1,000 and given Gh¢3,000 to his girlfriend.

The alleged theft came to light when someone familiar with the suspects overheard them discussing the money and informed the victim. Asmiu travelled to Accra, where the suspects were arrested.

The two main suspects have been arraigned, while Aziz has been granted bail. Police say the group cannot account for the remaining cash, claiming it was stolen from them.
