Tensions continue to spiral in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region as unidentified youths allegedly set fire to the house of the Akyode chief in Bonakye.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday, June 29, 2025, was confirmed by Oti Regional Minister John Kwadwo Gyapong during an interview.
This violent act comes in the wake of renewed ethnic clashes that erupted on June 26 following a dispute over a libation ritual tied to the Yam Festival. Despite ongoing mediation efforts, the unrest has escalated, with reports of continuous gunfire and widespread property destruction.
Minister Gyapong expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation. “We’ve lost lives, and essential services like electricity, banking, and education have ground to a halt,” he said. Three students have reportedly died, and many others have been injured in the chaos.
In response, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) is set to visit the hardest-hit communities, while a joint police and military task force has been deployed. Authorities are also utilizing surveillance technology to track down those behind the violence.
“The days of arresting and releasing suspects are over. Anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law,” the Minister emphasized, adding that curfews will be extended to volatile areas to prevent further escalation.
