A 48-year-old woman has been mistakenly shot dead by a hunter at Okanease in the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region.
The Assembly Member for the area, George Yaw Gameli, who confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency, said the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2026.
According to him, the hunter, identified as Victor Gyamesi, told authorities he fired his gun after spotting what he believed to be the reflection of an animal’s eyes during a hunting expedition.
However, he later realised he had shot Felicia Dutenya, a resident of the community.
Mr Gameli said he accompanied the suspect to the Katanga District Police Command to officially report the incident.
Preliminary information suggests the deceased had gone out early to harvest mangoes near a path frequently used by hunters. She was reportedly carrying a silver pan, whose reflection may have been mistaken for that of an animal.
The suspect is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the Worawora Government Hospital morgue pending autopsy.
