A tragic discovery in the early hours of Wednesday, July 30, has left residents of Pomposo, a suburb of the Obuasi East District, in shock after the body of a young prison officer was found in the River Pompo.
The deceased, identified as Constable Clement Tei Gyabah, was retrieved from the river along with his motorbike. The circumstances surrounding his death remain uncertain, prompting investigations by local authorities.
The Ghana Prisons Service has acknowledged the passing of their officer and indicated that a formal statement will be issued following initial findings.
Preliminary accounts suggest that Constable Gyabah, who reportedly set off from Asokore around 5:00 a.m. en route to work, was riding through a light drizzle when the incident occurred.
Some witnesses believe he lost control of his motorbike and crashed into a concrete safety barrier near the river, which separates the pedestrian walkway from the road.
However, conflicting accounts from other observers suggest the officer may have been struck by a vehicle on the same stretch. This theory is being considered due to visible injuries and lacerations on the body, raising questions about the exact sequence of events leading to his death.
The scene drew scores of onlookers as word of the incident spread, leaving many in the community stunned by the officer’s untimely demise.
Officers from the Ghana Police Service arrived promptly to secure the area and retrieve the body, which has since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and post-mortem examination.
Investigations into the cause of death are currently underway.
