A police constable Smith Gyeke has been arrested for allegedly shooting and killing a 25-year-old man at Koans Estate in Accra.
According to reports the incident occurred around 4:00 am when Smith Gyeke, an officer with the International Relations Directorate (IRD), was operating a commercial Matiz vehicle, registered GW 6459-21.
The off-duty police officer had picked up one Esther Owusua, a passenger, from Ablekuma Joma, who was headed to the Koans Estate area.
Upon reaching the estate, Owusua lost her way and called Stanley Ahadzi, now deceased for assistance.
Reports further indicated that, when Ahadzi arrived at the estate gate, a disagreement ensued over the fare charged by Gyeke which resulted in Gyeke allegedly pulling out his sidearm and shooting Ahadzi without provocation.
Crime scene investigators arrived at the scene after a distress call and found Ahadzi lying in a supine position with multiple gunshot wounds.
The body was transported to the Police Hospital morgue for preservation, pending an autopsy while Gyeke has been detained and his pistol seized for further investigation.
