The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old Okada rider in connection with a robbery at the Airport Residential Area, recovering two stolen mobile phones belonging to the victim.
According to a press statement released on Wednesday, March 4, the complainant, Anneli Niimpungu Amanyanga, accompanied by Justina Anamba, reported on February 25 that she was attacked on February 23 while walking to the Namibia High Commission.
According to her, a young man on a motorbike allegedly stole her handbag containing an iPhone 15 Pro Max valued at GH¢19,000, a Huawei P50 Pro worth GH¢11,000, her Namibian diplomatic passport, driver’s license, office and house keys, FBN Gold and Republic Bank ATM cards, and other personal items.
Upon receiving the complaint, a team from the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (RCID), supported by the Charlie SWAT Unit, tracked the stolen iPhone to Galaway, near the Agbogbloshie Total Filling Station. 26-year-old Miracle Asare, a spare parts dealer, was arrested, and the phone was recovered.
Further investigations led to the arrest of Theophilus Darko (40) and Benjamin Opoku (26), both phone dealers at Kwame Nkrumah Circle, who were identified as part of the chain through which the stolen device passed.
The Huawei P50 Pro was later traced to Dansoman, where 41-year-old Emmanuel Abangbase was arrested. He identified 24-year-old Daniel Ashiabi, the Okada rider, as the person who sold him the phone.
During interrogation, Ashiabi admitted to the robbery, saying he sold the iPhone for GH¢2,500 and the Huawei phone for GH¢1,000. He also confessed to burning the complainant’s diplomatic passport and other documents. Police investigations further revealed he had been involved in similar robberies in Achimota, Kaneshie, and the Airport Residential Area.
Daniel Ashiabi remains in police custody, assisting with investigations, while Theophilus Darko, Benjamin Opoku, and Emmanuel Abangbase have been granted police enquiry bail.
