Organized Labour has announced a nationwide strike starting on October 10, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to meet their demands regarding the issue of illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
In a press statement released on Tuesday, October 10, the group voiced their frustration over the government’s inaction.
“We are calling on all workers to stay at home until the government accedes to our demands.” The Statement said
They had previously given the government a deadline at the end of September to implement decisive actions against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, which they argue is severely damaging the environment and threatening the livelihoods of countless Ghanaians.
Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the TUC, in a statement, noted that “Following the expiration of our deadline, and the failure of the government to meet our demands on illegal mining, Organised Labour has decided to declare a nationwide strike with effect from October 10, 2024.”
He called on all workers to stay at home starting Thursday, October 10, 2024, to pressure the government into taking immediate action to curb illegal mining activities.
