The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has concluded and presented its report on an investigation into the alleged attempted bribery of members of the majority caucus of the Parliament of Ghana by a wealthy Ghanaian businessman.
It would be recalled that on November 3, 2022, a pressure group, OccupyGhana petitioned the OSP to investigate allegations of the attempted bribery of some NPP MPs who were seeking to remove the finance minister Ken Ofori-Atta from office.
The pressure group’s petition came after Majority Leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Mr. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and the MP for Asante Akyem North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Mr. Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi alleged that an unnamed, wealthy businessman had attempted to bribe them.
The OSP upon receiving the petition with the assistance and facilitation of the Office of the Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament conducted the investigations and found that a businessman did attempt to offer money to a section of the majority of MPs.
“It appears from the OSP’s gathered intelligence that a wealthy businessman did in fact attempt to offer money to a section of the majority caucus of Parliament to influence their demand for the resignation or removal of Mr. Ofori-Atta as Minister for Finance. It also appears that the monetary offer
was rejected by the contacted Members of Parliament”, the report indicated.
Although the OSP has identified the supposed businessman, his name has been withheld per the report dated December 28, 2023.
The OSP further mentioned that based on the gathered intelligence and its investigation of the activities of its identified suspect, there is not sufficient evidence to sustain any criminal charges but the investigation may be re-opened should the circumstances and further facts so dictate.
