Oti Regional Police Command arrests 8 over Nkwanta clashes

Police officers patrol during the presidential and parliamentary elections in the Bole district, northern region, on December 7, 2016. Ghanians voted in tight presidential and parliamentary polls that are seen as a litmus test of stability for Africa's most secure democracy as it wrestles with a stumbling economy and corruption scandals. Charismatic President John Mahama is running for reelection against veteran politician Nana Akufo-Addo, who has chipped away at the popularity of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) party by criticising the country's sluggish growth and high-profile corruption scandals. / AFP / PIUS UTOMI EKPEI (Photo credit should read PIUS UTOMI EKPEI/AFP/Getty Images)

The Oti Regional Police Command says it has arrested eight individuals in connection with a series of violent incidents in the Nkwanta South Municipality, which have left several people injured and one person dead.

The unrest began on Thursday, June 26, 2025, when two female day students were struck by gunfire while on their way to school.

The situation escalated the following day, Friday, June 27, 2025, when a male student was fatally hit by a stray bullet while seated in his classroom during mock examinations.

These incidents heightened existing tensions in the area, prompting swift intervention by local authorities.

Providing an update on the situation, the Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, confirmed that a comprehensive security strategy has been deployed in Nkwanta and surrounding areas to restore peace and protect residents.

“As I speak, calm has been restored in Nkwanta following the recent violent incidents. Swift and decisive actions have been taken to maintain law and order,” DSP Nchor stated.

He reassured the community of their safety, noting that proactive measures—such as increased patrols and the establishment of checkpoints, have been implemented to deter further violence and ensure a secure environment for all residents.

The tragic events have sparked serious concern about community safety and the toll of tribal tensions on the lives of students. Local leaders and community members are calling for dialogue and reconciliation to prevent future occurrences and promote peaceful coexistence among all ethnic groups in the region.
