Madagascar’s transitional authorities have officially revoked the citizenship of ousted President Andry Rajoelina, citing his acquisition of French nationality in 2014 as grounds for disqualification under Malagasy law.

A decree published in the country’s official gazette confirmed that Rajoelina, who was recently removed from power following a military-backed takeover, no longer holds Malagasy citizenship. The move effectively bars him from holding any future political office in the island nation.

Rajoelina’s loss of nationality follows his ouster on October 14, which came amid widespread protests and growing discontent over his leadership. Days after being removed, the former president reportedly fled the country, while the military assumed temporary control.

The new interim leader, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, was sworn in on October 17 and has since vowed to restore order, fight corruption, and organize democratic elections within two years.

Observers say the decision to strip Rajoelina of his citizenship marks a dramatic escalation in Madagascar’s political crisis. Analysts warn it could further divide the nation, already grappling with economic hardship and public mistrust of the political elite.

Rajoelina, who first rose to power in 2009 through a similar coup, has not yet publicly responded to the government’s decision. His political allies have condemned the move as politically motivated, while others see it as a step toward accountability and national renewal.

The international community continues to monitor developments closely, with regional organizations calling for restraint and urging dialogue to prevent further instability.
