The Government of Ghana, since Monday 4th September 2023, has commenced the disbursement of social subsidies to eligible households across the nation through the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme under the Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection (MoGCSP).
The exercise, which represents the payments of both the 85th and 86th Cycles of LEAP Cash Grant, is set to benefit over 1.5 million individuals.
To ensure effective processes of payments, MoGCSP has assembled dedicated monitoring teams tasked with collecting data on various indicators to evaluate programme performance. This effort will also facilitate interaction between the Ministry and beneficiaries, enabling the assessment of the programme’s impact on their lives.
As part of the nationwide payment, Hon. Francisca Oteng Mensah, Deputy Minister for MoGCSP also conducted a field visit to the Kumawu and Sekyere East districts within the Ashanti Region.
Her primary objective during the visit was to oversee and evaluate the disbursement of LEAP cash grants to beneficiaries in the region.
During her visit to designated payment centers, Madam Francisca Oteng Mensah encouraged recipients to consider investing the received funds in profitable and sustainable ventures, thereby enhancing their livelihoods.
Due to the combined payment, households with one eligible member will receive Two Hundred and Fifty-Six Ghana Cedis (GH₵256.00), while those with two eligible members will receive Three Hundred and Four Ghana Cedis (GH₵304.00). Three-member households will receive Three Hundred and Fifty-Two Ghana Cedis (GH₵352.00), while households with four or more eligible members will receive Four Hundred and Twenty-Four Ghana Cedis (GH₵424.00).
LEAP, a social cash transfer program aimed at supporting Ghana’s most impoverished households, focuses on poverty alleviation by promoting human capital development and smoothing consumption.
The disbursement amount to each household is determined by the number of eligible members it comprises. Households qualify for LEAP if they include orphaned and vulnerable children, elderly individuals aged 65 and above without support, persons with severe disabilities preventing them from working, and pregnant women and mothers with infants under one year.
