The Ghana Chapter of the Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE-Ghana) has partnered with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection to strengthen gender-inclusive education and skills training initiatives.
According to the FAWE Executives, the initiative is a bid to expand educational opportunities for vulnerable young people, particularly girls in Ghana.
Ahead of the official launch of its Strategic Plan and the Mastercard Foundation Phase II Programme, FAWE-Ghana, alongside members of the FAWE Africa Board, met with the sector minister, Hon. Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to discuss collaborative efforts to close the education gap for marginalised communities.
During the engagement, FAWE reaffirmed its long-standing commitment to ensuring quality education for disadvantaged groups, spotlighting its decade-long scholarship programme which has supported students; both boys and girls; through secondary and tertiary education across Africa.
The discussions focused on key issues including the need for data-driven decision-making in education policy. The FAWE team advocated for enhanced demographic tracking from birth, which they believe would better inform targeted interventions to address inequalities.
Dr. Lartey commended FAWE’s ongoing efforts and pledged the Ministry’s full support for initiatives that promote inclusive and equitable learning. She stressed the importance of maintaining a gender-balanced approach in education advocacy.
“Empowering girls remains critical,” she said, “but we must also ensure that boys are not left behind. Achieving real equity means creating opportunities for all.”
The Minister also highlighted the government’s intensified focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a strategic tool for youth employment and economic growth. She cited human capital development as a cornerstone of Ghana’s broader development agenda.
As part of its new phase of programming, FAWE has rolled out a bridging programme in partnership with local universities under the Mastercard Foundation banner. The initiative aims to equip more than 1,100 young people—especially girls—with the academic and vocational tools needed to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
Also present at the meeting was the Ministry’s Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah, who reiterated the government’s commitment to closing educational disparities and promoting lifelong learning for all.
