Over 2,000 people died through road crashes in 2023 – MTTD

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has disclosed that a total of 2,276 people lost their lives through road crashes in 2023.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has disclosed that a total of 2,276 people lost their lives through road crashes in 2023.

In a statement, the MTTD revealed that a total of 14,135 road crashes were recorded with 15,409 people sustaining various degrees of injuries.

Per the figures revealed, the total number of crashes recorded in 2023 dropped as compared to figures recorded in 2022 which was 14,960 resulting in the death of 2,373, leaving 15,690 injured.

Breaking the figures down further for the year 2023, Accra recorded a total of 4,797 road crashes, Tema 994, Eastern 490, Eastern North 139, Eastern South 881, Central 576, Central East 295, Central North 196, Western 706, Western North 237, Ashanti 2,312, Ashanti North 421, and Ashanti South 684.

Volta recorded 319, Volta North 101, Oti 49, Northern 115, North East 41, Savanna 66, Upper West 147, Upper East 143, Bono 133, Bono East 165, and Ahafo 128.

The data also revealed that, a total of 23,998 vehicles were involved in the road crashes with private vehicles being 10,767, Commercial vehicles being 8,084 and motorcycles were 5,147.

Commenting on the figures, director general of the National Road Safety Authority, David Osafo Adonteng mentioned that although the number of crashes have dropped as compared to the previous year, the media need to do more to educate road users.

He also mentioned that the NRSA will continue to work hard and employ more technologies such as cameras on the roads to monitor road users.
