The Public Affairs Director of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, has revealed that a total of 829 people have lost their lives through road crashes in the first quarter of 2024.

Chief Superintendent Obeng expressed concern that the situation may worsen due to the increased road usage associated with the election season and political campaign activities.

This was disclosed at the 7th Annual Conference of the Ghana National Association of Driving Schools (GHANADRIVE) in Koforidua, Eastern Region, on the theme “Promoting Road Safety Through Sustainable Driver Education”.

In the space of four (4) months, Chief Superintendent Obeng also disclosed 4,955 injuries out of a total of 4,503 road crashes.

Advocating for measures to reduce road crashes, Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng called on stakeholders to collectively adopt strategies to prevent crashes during this period of political activities.

At the conference, Rev. Erasmus Amankwa Addo, President of GHANADRIVE, said sustainable driver education is crucial in reducing road accidents, adding that about 85% of road crashes are due to human errors, with drivers being major contributors.

He therefore called on drivers to adopt formal driver education as they play a crucial role in saving lives.

Rev. Erasmus Amankwa Addo added that improved interventions such as the dualization of major highways are crucial in curbing road crashes going forward.
