Marriage is meant to be a celebration of love and commitment, but for those of us who identify as LGBTQ+, it can often become a battleground for our identity and beliefs.
In this opinion piece, I want to share my personal ordeal in marriage and the insults I have endured due to my LGBTQ+ stance. Unfortunately, due to the fear of stigma and potential victimization, I cannot include my picture as it may jeopardize my job in a reputable insurance company.
Many of us suffer in silence because of our sexual orientation, and it is crucial to shed light on the challenges we face. The recent controversy surrounding Ama Governor, a Ghanaian socialite denied entry to the bar due to her support for LGBTQ+ rights, resonates deeply with my own experiences. It is time to address the discrimination faced by individuals like Ama and myself and advocate for a more inclusive society.
1. The Bitter Divorce:
My journey began with a bitter divorce from a brutish man who not only posed a threat to my life but also to the lives of my children. It was during this painful period that I made the decision to live my life authentically, embracing my true self. However, I was well aware of the stigma that would accompany such a decision, and unfortunately, the hate and discrimination did not only come from distant individuals but also from close relations whom I expected to understand me best.
2. Insults and Questioning of Sexuality:
Every day, LGBTQ+ individuals like myself face the distressing reality of having our sexuality questioned and insulted. It is disheartening to witness the judgment and prejudice that stems from ignorance and fear. We are constantly subjected to invasive and hurtful inquiries about our personal lives, which can be emotionally draining and dehumanizing. The constant scrutiny and doubt can take a toll on our mental well-being and overall sense of self-worth.
3. Fear of Stigma and Victimization:
Fear of stigma and potential victimization often forces many of us to hide our true selves. The fear of losing our jobs, facing discrimination, or being ostracized by society can be paralyzing. It is a sad reality that even in professional settings, individuals like Ama Governor are denied opportunities and recognition solely based on their sexual orientation. This not only hinders personal growth but also perpetuates a culture of discrimination and inequality.
4. Ama Governor’s Struggle:
Ama Governor’s case serves as a poignant example of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Ghana. After dedicating six long years to studying for her LLM, she was denied entry to the bar solely because of her sexual orientation. This denial not only infringes upon her rights but also highlights the deep-rooted discrimination prevalent in society. It is a setback for progress and inclusivity, hindering the path towards a more equal and just future.
The journey of an LGBTQ+ individual in marriage is often fraught with adversity, but it also showcases our resilience and determination. My own experiences, coupled with the struggles faced by Ama Governor, emphasize the urgent need for change. We must strive for a society that embraces diversity, respects individual choices, and upholds the principles of equality and justice. It is crucial that we create safe spaces where LGBTQ+ individuals can live their lives authentically, without fear of stigma or victimization. By fostering education, empathy, and open dialogue, we can break down the barriers of discrimination and work towards a world where everyone is accepted and celebrated, regardless of their sexual orientation.
