Members of Parliament (MP) have reconvened for extra-ordinary sitting today Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at the Dome of the Accra International Conference Centre to transact government business.

Parliament adjourned Sine die on July 30, 2024, after successfully completing the second meeting of the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

During the session, members passed several bills including the Affirmative Action Bill however, Majority Leader,  Alexander Afenyo-Markin petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to reassemble parliament to transact urgent government business.

“Mr Speaker will recall that Parliament adjourned sine die on Tuesday, 30 July 2014, at which time the aforementioned items had been duly advertised and scheduled for consideration. The urgency of these matters necessitates our reconvening to fulfill our constitutional mandate and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people. We wish to emphasize that this requisition is made in the utmost good faith and in the national interest, to enable the Government to discharge its constitutional and democratic obligations to the people of Ghana. The matters outlined herein are of pressing importance and require the urgent attention of Parliament,” the Majority leader noted in his petition to the Speaker.

Government businesses such as the $250 million International Development Association (IDA) financing agreement, requests for Tax Exemptions for designated beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme, the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and certain bills are expected to be considered during this extra-ordinary sitting.

The extraordinary meeting at the Dome is a result of ongoing works in parliament and the urgent need for a place to transact government business.
