Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has criticised Ghana’s current Parliament, accusing lawmakers of placing party interests above the needs of the country.

Speaking at a public lecture held in honour of Justice D. F. Annan, the first Speaker of Parliament under the Fourth Republic, Justice Atuguba said some Members of Parliament appear to be more loyal to their political parties and the sitting President than to their constitutional responsibilities.

He argued that Parliament has increasingly become a battleground for political dominance, describing the situation as a “tug of war” for party supremacy.

According to him, this trend weakens Parliament’s ability to effectively represent the interests of Ghanaians and fulfil its oversight role.

Justice Atuguba called for a renewed commitment to the principles of accountability, independence, and service to the national interest.
