The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, has directed the Parliamentary Select Committees on Defence and Interior, as well as Local Government and Rural Development, to investigate the recent surge in fire outbreaks at marketplaces across the country.

The committees are tasked with examining the causes of the fires and making recommendations to prevent future incidents.

They are expected to submit their findings and proposals within the first week of Parliament’s second meeting.

The directive follows a statement by the Member of Parliament for Subin, Hon. Kofi Obiri Yeboah, who raised concerns over the increasing frequency of market fires, citing the devastating impact on businesses and livelihoods.

Addressing Parliament, he highlighted the recent fires at Adum and Magazine in Kumasi, which destroyed sections of the industrial hub, leaving many spare parts dealers and artisans facing heavy losses.

Hon. Yeboah emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address fire risks, including improved infrastructure and stricter safety regulations to protect traders.
