Parliament has officially resumed its sittings today, marking the beginning of the Second Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament.

The return follows a recess observed during the Easter period, which temporarily paused legislative activities and allowed Members of Parliament (MPs) a brief respite from their demanding schedules.

With the resumption of parliamentary business, lawmakers are expected to dive into a packed agenda that includes robust legislative debates, intensive committee work, and urgent discussions on matters of national importance.

The session is anticipated to feature rigorous scrutiny of government policies and programs as MPs seek to fulfill their oversight responsibilities.

One of the most anticipated events of this session is the scheduled presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review by the Minister for Finance, set for August.

This critical review will provide a comprehensive update on the country’s fiscal performance and outline necessary adjustments to the national budget.

Ahead of today’s sitting, the Second Deputy Majority Whip, Richard Acheampong, spoke to Citi FM, highlighting the session’s agenda. “Ministers will be making their statements, allowing us to evaluate their achievements over the past three months and understand their plans moving forward,” Mr. Acheampong stated.

In preparation for the resumed session, the Minority Caucus held a strategic retreat over the weekend.

The retreat focused on evaluating the caucus’s performance in the previous session and defining key priorities for the new meeting. It also served as an opportunity to refine the caucus’s oversight strategy, ensuring that the opposition remains a formidable force in Parliament.

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin used the occasion to reaffirm the opposition’s commitment to playing an active and constructive role.

“We are sending a strong message to our opponents, we will hold their feet to the fire while remaining a responsible opposition,” Afenyo-Markin emphatically stated.
