Parliament has rejected a motion by the Minority Caucus seeking the establishment of an ad hoc committee to investigate a reported $214 million loss under the Gold for Reserves programme.
The motion, sponsored by Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, MP for Ofoase-Ayirebi and Ranking Member on the Economy and Development Committee, sought to examine the programme’s design, implementation, governance, financial performance, and its environmental and public health impact.
The Majority Caucus opposed the motion, arguing that the reported losses should be considered operational costs and therefore, do not warrant a formal probe.
The motion was subsequently rejected by a voice vote.
Following the decision, the Minority called for a secret ballot, but the request was denied by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.
