Parliament’s Appointments Committee has summoned political activist and Co-convenor of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, to appear before the committee on January 29 to substantiate allegations of bribery against its members.
The invitation, directed by the Chairman of the Appointments Committee, Bernard Ahiafor, follows accusations made by Mr. Barker-Vormawor that members of the committee have been demanding money from ministerial nominees in exchange for their approval during the vetting process.
Mr. Ahiafor, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, has categorically denied the claims, describing them as baseless and damaging to the integrity of the committee.
He emphasized that Parliament takes such allegations seriously and has asked the activist to provide evidence to support his claims.
“We operate transparently and adhere to ethical standards in all our proceedings. These accusations are without merit, and we challenge the accuser to present proof,” Mr. Ahiafor stated during a press briefing.
“I advise we suspend sitting and deliberate further before proceeding.” Hon. Afenyo-Markin also stated
The Clerk of the Committee has been directed to issue an official invitation to Mr. Barker-Vormawor to testify before the Appointments Committee.
His appearance is expected to shed light on the allegations, which have sparked widespread discussion about the credibility of parliamentary processes.
Meanwhile, the Minister Designate for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah’s vetting has been suspended till further notice.
